Autumn Walks for Families

Exploring Scenic Low-Level Family Walks: Glencoe, Ardgour, and Inchree.

When it comes to low-level family walks that offer stunning scenery and tranquility, there's no better place than the Scottish Highlands. Let's explore three delightful walks in Glencoe, Ardgour, and Inchree, perfect for families and anyone seeking a serene experience.

Glencoe Lochans

Glencoe Lochans

Start and Finish Point: Begin and end your walk at the Glencoe Lochan car park.

As you wander through this picturesque area, listen for chirping birds like chaffinches and robins. Keep an eye out for red deer grazing in the quieter zones. This time of year you will also hear the bellowing of the stags rutting around the local hills.

This walk features a mix of native and exotic flora. Expect to see Douglas firs and diverse ferns blanketing the ground. In autumn, the lochans are enveloped in a warm tapestry of golds, reds, and browns as the trees' leaves transform, creating a perfect reflection in the water.

Ardgour Lochans

Start and Finish Point: Park at the Ardgour ferry terminal or walk from Roam West. Pop across the Corran Ferry, free for foot passengers. From there, it’s a short walk to the start of the lochan trails all sign posted.

Ardgour is a haven for watching buzzards soaring overhead, and if you’re lucky, you might spot a pine marten slinking through the underbrush. The lochans are fringed with moss-covered trees and heathers, offering a magical woodland experience. Experience an explosion of colours, with birch and rowan trees showing off their vibrant autumn shades while their leaves carpet the forest floor. Author and friend Neil Ansell has just published his latest book ‘The Edge of Silence’ based in this lovely area.

Inchree Waterfalls

Start and Finish Point: Start your journey at the Inchree Falls car park. The trail loops back, making it easy for all family members. On this walk, expect to hear the sounds of cascading water mingling with the songs of willow warblers. Red squirrels can often be seen scampering in the trees. The area is rich with birches and spruces, interspersed with thick undergrowth. Fungi, including various mushrooms, thrive here in the damp conditions.

As you near the falls, the turning leaves paint a dazzling autumn picture. The trees’ reflections dance in the stream, adding to the season’s mesmerising palette.
