A Short History of Scotch Whisky

Whisky, often referred to as the “water of life” (from the Gaelic uisge beatha), has been distilled in Scotland for over a thousand years. With roots in monastic distillation, it evolved over centuries into the globally cherished spirit it is today. Scotland’s clean air, pure water, and abundant barley have made it the natural home for whisky, and the Highlands are its heartland.

Legalisation in 1823 allowed Highland distillers to perfect their craft, giving rise to many of the famous Highland whisky brands we enjoy today.
